Our firm participated in a Distracted Driving Awareness Assembly at Upper Darby High School yesterday afternoon. There were various sponsors at the event to talk to the teens about different types of distracted driving, such as driving under the influence and texting while driving. The event was a great success.
We had a table at the event and brought awareness to the teens about texting while driving through a simple demonstration.
About 10 cones were set up and the teens had to weave in and out of the cones while texting on the cell phone. They, of course, were not driving, but the simple demonstration showed the multiple effects of texting while driving.
When drivers are texting while driving, they often:
When we had the teens walk through the cones, we found that none of the teens could walk and look ahead while attempting to send a text. We also saw the teens drifting when they were walking; they were not staying on course. They were slowing down and speeding up as they were trying to walk and text at the same time.
Just with a simple demonstration like that, one can see the distractions and effects texting while driving can cause.
Distracted driving causes accidents every day. Distracted driving includes talking on the phone while driving, putting on make-up while driving, eating while driving, putting an address into a GPS while driving, etc. Many drivers think they are capable of multi-tasking while they drive. The reality is that they are not. Sadly, they only realize this when it's too late.
Though we help many innocent victims who are injured in distracted driving accidents, we are committed to bringing awareness to the community about the dangers of texting while driving through our experiences representing innocent victims of such accidents.
