Preventing Dog Attacks When Purchasing A New Family Dog| PA & NJ Dog Bite Injury Lawyers

Recently, there have been a lot of news reports of dog attacks by family dogs.  Last month, a baby was attacked by her grandmother's pit bull in North Carolina. In August, a nine year old girl was attacked by a pit bull in her babysitter's home in Philadelphia.

Most recently, a family in Rhode Island was bitten by their new dog.  Three members of the family were bitten by the pit bull mix.  The family got the dog from a friend a couple of days before the attack.  The new dog did not mix well with the other dogs already in the house, and the dogs began fighting.  Family members tried to break up the fight and were all attacked in the process.  All three were rushed to the hospital to treat serious injuries.

As a dog bite injury lawyer, my colleagues and I often see similar situations where the victim is bitten by a family dog.  When a new dog is brought into a family, it is crucial that the dog is a good fit for the family. The family needs to make sure of the following:

  • if there are other dogs in the family, make sure the new dog fits in with the other dogs;
  • if there are young children or babies, ask the breeder or seller about the dog to make sure the dog's temperament is suitable to be around young children;
  • do not leave young children alone with the new dog; and
  • carefully observe the dog's behavior to make sure the dog fits in with the home environment.

If you or a loved one was attacked and bitten by a relative's dog, you or your loved one may be entitled to compensation for the injuries.  Talk to an experienced dog bite injury lawyer in PA or NJ about your potential case.
