Although youth sports such as football have many benefits including teamwork, they also carry risks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 1 million kids had to be treated in emergency rooms, doctor's offices and hospitals for football injuries in 2008.

Kids Sports Safety & Football Injuries

The following information may help give you a better idea about some of the risks and safety measures that should be taken with kid's football:

  • Common injuries - include sprains, bruises, pulled muscles, strains, torn ligaments, internal injuries (damaged organs), broken bones, concussions, sunburn, and back injuries. Injuries are more prevalent in the knees and ankles.
  • Safety measures - children should be required to wear a mouth guard; helmet; shoulder pads; athletic supporters; chest/rib pads; thigh, forearm and elbow pads; proper shoes; shin guards; and sunscreen. Additionally, your child should have an adequate supply of water and be encouraged to hydrate often.
  • Injury prevention - safety equipment should be used properly, warm-up and cool-down exercises should be performed and proper coaching is imperative.

If your child has suffered a serious sports injury in New Jersey and you think the coach or other supervisor is to blame, you should share your concerns with a New Jersey sports injury lawyer. You might be able to hold all negligent parties accountable through a personal injury claim, whether the injury is related to football or any other sporting event.
