Our clients owned two adult Doberman dogs. Our clients brought their dogs to the defendant’s kennel for a two week in-house training program. The kennel advertised training based on “love and affection”. After the dogs returned to their home, their behavior was different and they seemed “skittish”. Several months after the training session, one of the dogs attacked the wife-owner in her home. She suffered injuries to her arm which left her with some scarring. Also, her young son witnessed the attack.
We filed a case against the kennel for the mother’s injuries as well as for the child’s emotional distress from witnessing the attack.
We settled the case for $1,000,000.00, which was the limit of insurance coverage for the training company. We utilized expert witnesses in canine behavioral sciences, professional dog handlers and professional dog trainers. We were also able to find former employees of the defendant training company who were able to provide us with key information about the improper training techniques utilized by this company. This was a very challenging case due to the fact that our client was attacked by her own dog, many months after the defendant had trained the dog.
Awarded: $1,000,000 settlement
