Get to know the founding partner of the personal injury and accident group at White and Williams, LLP. Daniel O'Brien answers some general questions about his personal injury practice.
What types of cases do you handle in PA and NJ?
We handle serious personal injury cases and wrongful death cases. We don’t necessarily limit ourselves to certain types of cases or certain types of accidents. However, the areas where we’ve had very notable success include:
Do you take every potential client's case?
No, I don’t take every case that comes my way. I am very selective as to whom I represent. The reason for that is because of the way I handle my cases. I partner with my clients in such a way that we work together to get them the absolute best possible economic result that is obtainable under the facts of the case. I select the cases where I can work with the client, and the client can work with me to best achieve that goal.
In addition, I never ask potential clients to sign a contract at the initial meetings. That decision is too important to make right on the spot. I listen to them and tell them what I think I can do to help them. Then, the potential clients have time to think about me, think about their cases and decide if we are a good match.
We stress quality representation, and we work hand in hand with our clients. You will get to know us very well. We spend a lot of time with our clients.
One thing I can promise is that if we accept a case, we will never ask our client to say anything that isn’t true. We will never ask our client to do or say anything they are ashamed of. Our clients uniformly are proud to be associated with us.
What is your approach to handling cases?
Our firm’s approach to handling personal injury cases is one in which we partner with our clients. We have what I believe a collection of people who are not only excellent lawyers, but also genuinely nice personable, friendly people. We work as partners with our clients to bring forth and present exactly how the accident and injuries have affected our clients. We work with our clients to present all of the evidence in such a way that enables us to obtain the best possible result for our clients.
Our philosophy or style of handling injury cases is one in which we play within the rules, i.e., being honest, and not screaming and banging on the tables. We play hard, and we play to win. We’ve been very good and successful in handling cases that way. We are proud of the way we practice law.
Why did you become a lawyer?
I always wanted to be a lawyer. I have lawyers in my family. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I thought it was an opportunity and way to help people. I know it sounds corny, but I find that helping people who are injured in accidents and their families is one of the most noble and worthwhile ways a person can make a living.
