Almost every personal injury lawyer in America offers a free initial consultation. What you are not told ahead of time though, is that when you go in for the free initial consultation, 9 times out of 10 the lawyer is going to ask you to sign a contract hiring that lawyer to handle your case.
Look, in our everyday lives, we don’t ask people to marry us on our first date. The relationship between a client and a personal injury lawyer is a very close relationship. It requires a very good working relationship, and it is usually a long term relationship. Something like that should not be consummated on a first date.
We make it a practice to never ask a prospective client to hire us or to sign a contract during our first meeting.
I think the best thing is for us and the prospective client to have a nice, relaxed, open meeting regarding the case and discuss the pluses and minuses and the strengths and weaknesses of the case. We get a feel for each other.
Then, what I usually do is ask the client to go home and think about us for a couple of days and think about everything that was said. If they think we are a good fit, they can call us. At that point in time, we will send them a contract which formalizes the relationship.
There is really no good reason for a lawyer to pressure a prospective client into signing a contract.
If you would like to have a relaxed, no pressure meeting with me to discuss your case, give me a call. I would be happy to schedule it with you. Thank you.
