In the recent years, it seems like there are so many more people, children and adults alike, with food allergies compared to 20 or even 10 years ago. When I was growing up, I don’t remember any of my friends being allergic to any types of foods. The only person I knew growing up that had an allergy was a friend who was allergic to bee stings.
So why are there so many food allergies now? Many people have adverse allergic reactions to common foods such as peanuts, gluten, dairy, tree nuts, etc.
There is no one consensus out there as to why there are so many food allergies now, but below are a few possible theories as to why so many food allergies are diagnosed in children and adults.
One of the reasons why there seems to be a lot more people with allergies today may be due to better awareness of the issue. With physicians and parents more aware of the issue, more people are tested and diagnosed with food allergies.
Medical advances have decreased the number of infectious diseases. As a result, the body may be moving away from cytokines (immune factors) that fight infection to cytokines that promote allergy formation.
Another factor contributing to increased food allergies is that there are a lot of processed foods out there. Due to technological advances, there are a lot more processed foods in the market. Though processed foods make it easier for people to prepare meals; they may be increasing the expression of certain food allergens.
What is the best treatment for food allergies? The answer is avoidance. However, there are people out there who say they have cures, treatments or pills for people with food allergies to try. Individuals with food allergies and parents of children with food allergies should stay away from people who promise cures and instead, educate themselves on how to avoid food allergens.
It is important for parents to educate themselves about their child’s food allergy, and in turn, educate their child about their food allergy. The child with a food allergy needs to learn from the get go about their food allergy. Parents need to continuously talk to their child about the food allergy and how to avoid accidental exposure at public places such as:
If you have a food allergy or if your child has a food allergy, you may feel overwhelmed and feel like you or your child has to live in a bubble to avoid accidental exposure. There are many resources and support out there for people with food allergies.
One popular online support site for parents of kids with food allergy is www.kidswithfoodallergies.org. There are other blogs and support groups out there. Parents can go online and search for food allergy support groups.
