May 9, 2011 - North Philadelphia, PA - According to a report from Philly.com, the driver of a stolen Volvo plowed into a neighborhood block party, injuring a teenager and 3 children.
An unidentified 54-year-old drunk driver careened down the 2600 block of Myrtlewood Street on Saturday, May 7 at approximately 4:30 p.m. when he drove into the midst of the crowded block party, police said.
The drunk driver first crashed through some picnic tables set up for the party and a parked car before striking a 19-year-old man. He then hit the children, who were playing in a "moon bounce." He continued on, crashing into a BMW at 26th and Master Streets.
Police pursued the drunk driver, eventually blocking his escape when he crashed on the 2600 block of West Sergeant Street. The driver attempted to flee police but they were able to stop him.
The 19-year-old victim suffered minor injuries. Of the 3 children struck, a 9-year-old boy was seriously hurt with a head injury. The young victim is at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, listed in critical condition. Another 9-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl suffered minor injuries as well.
The driver is facing aggravated assault charges, along with driving under the influence.
