GE has issued a recall for approximately 174,000 Profile and Monogram Dishwashers because they pose a fire hazard. Consumers are advised to stop using these dishwashers immediately.
It has been discovered that a short circuit can occur if water condensation drips onto the control board. This would cause the connector to overheat, which could lead to a fire.
There have been 5 reports of fire-related incidents connected to the recalled GE dishwashers. Four of the incidents led to damaged kitchen countertops and the other incident led to damaged cabinets and smoke damage in the home. GE has not received reports of any injuries.
The recalled Profile dishwashers were manufactured from July 2003 through December 2005; the Monogram dishwashers were manufactured from January 2004 through December 2006. They are black, white, stainless steel or bisque and they have custom panels.
The model numbers for the recalled GE dishwashers include:
The recalled dishwashers were sold nationwide from July 2003 to December 2006. The retail price ranged from $750 to $1,400.
Consumers are advised to shut off the supply of electricity to the dishwasher by removing the fuse or turning off the appropriate circuit breaker. GE will either repair the problem for free or offer a $200 rebate toward a new Profile dishwasher or $400 toward a new Monogram dishwasher.
