New PA "Rules of the Road" Provide More Protection for Bicycle Riders Sharing the Road with Motorists

Posted on Apr 21, 2012

On Monday, April 2, 2012, a new Pennsylvania law went into effect with regard to responsibilities shared by bicycle riders and motorists.

 The new "rules of the road" require:

  • drivers to leave a 4-foot distance or buffer zone when passing a bicyclist;
  • drivers making a turn to give cyclists the right of way when the cyclists are traveling in the opposite direction of the drivers; and
  • bicycle riders to avoid disrupting normal traffic patterns.

There have been mixed feelings about the new law.  On one hand, many, including State officials, say the law will improve safety and traffic flow. On the other hand, many say the legislation will be tough to enforce.  How do you really measure the buffer zone when there is an accident between a motorist and a cyclist?

Many careful drivers already do what the new law requires.  Even if the law is difficult to enforce, it will raise awareness over time and give cyclists more protection.

Bicycle riders who sustain injuries as a result of crashes with cars are entitled to compensation from the driver at-fault. If you were injured in a bicycle accident, speak to an experienced knowledgeable Philadelphia, PA car accident personal injury lawyer about your rights to pursue damages. 877.944.8396
