December 9, 2010 - As parents are on the hunt for holiday gifts, it is important to stay current on the most up-to-date information about recalled toys and other dangerous children's products.
One such case of which to be aware: Munchkin Inc., a California company, is voluntarily recalling about 34,000 Bathtub Subs toys because they pose a laceration hazard.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is advising parents and caregivers to stop allowing their children to play with the toys unless instructed otherwise.
There is an intake valve located underneath the toy submarines. It poses a laceration hazard because it can suck up a child's loose skin.
Munchkin and the CPSC have confirmed 19 incidents in which boys suffered lacerations. One boy required medical treatment for his lacerations.
The recalled toys, which were manufactured in China, are battery-operated. They are yellow with turquoise windows and a happy smiling face. On the back of the submarine is a propeller and on top is a periscope, both orange. The periscope is the on/off switch.
The toy's intake valve contains a water pump, which sucks water in to allow the submarine to move forward. Bathtub Subs, as the name implies, are intended for play during bath time.
The products were sold at mass merchandise retailers and specialty children's shops nationwide from November 2009 until September 2010. They cost around $7.
Consumers can get a free replacement toy by contacting Munchkin at 1-877-242-3134.
Though recalled toys are a safety concern on a year-round basis, it is especially important to stay abreast of safety issues as the holidays approach and children are inundated with new toys and other children's products.
If your child has been injured from the use of a recalled toy or other dangerous product, you may be entitled to compensation in a defective products claim.
