February 10, 2011 - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling about 5,700 Sunbeam Convertible Irons because of a fire hazard that could lead to serious injuries and property damage.
The iron is susceptible to overheating because of problems with the wiring. Sunbeam Products, which is based in Florida, is aware of 17 reports of incidents in which irons overheated. Additionally, there were 3 reports of irons erupting in flames. However, no injuries had been reported as of February 3, 2011 in connection with the recalled irons.
The recalled Sunbeam Convertible Irons have the model number GCSBRS - 103 on the plastic base. The hand-held iron is gray and blue and it converts to a steamer. The date codes C235 or C237 are printed on the plug's blade and on the packaging.
These irons were made in China and sold at Bed Bath & Beyond retailers across the United States from June to November 2010 for around $60.
Consumers are advised to stop using the irons immediately and contact Sunbeam to get a replacement for free. For more information, you can call Sunbeam: 1-800-656-9708.
