Yet again, another recall for children/baby products. Just yesterday, Abbott Laboratories issued a baby formula recall, citing beetle and beetle larvae contamination. The types of formula recalled are: Similac powder versions offered in plastic containers and some Similac powder offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans. Affected infants may experience gastrointestional discomfort and/or a refusal to eat.
Just last year, Tylenol brand over-the-counter drugs for children were recalled also due to contamination concerns.
While recalls certainly are an appropriate response, what product manufacturers, especially children's product manufacturers should be more concerned with, is prevention. As consumers, we put our trust in large corporations and unless and until we demand more, recalls such as these will only continue to occur. Perhaps it is time for congressional involvement/investigation.
